Comprehensive renovation of the sports arena: acoustics, aesthetics and versatility with Ecophon Clipso™

The Oviedo Sports Palace, with a capacity of 8,000 spectators, has undergone a major transformation to improve its acoustic quality, refresh the visual appearance of the venue and resolve the issues caused by the old cellulose ceiling, which collected dust and appeared outdated.

The technical challenge

The most demanding aspect of the project was the complex structure of the ceiling, located 25 metres above the floor and characterised by a vaulted form with hardly any straight lines. These conditions ruled out most conventional materials and required a solution that could adapt to the unique geometry of the space.

The solution: Ecophon Clipso™ So Acoustic

The acoustic stretched fabric Clipso was selected as the ideal material thanks to its ability to meet several key requirements:

• Versatility and adaptability – allowing precise adjustment to each curve of the ceiling.
• Acoustic absorption performance – essential for comfort in such a large-volume space.

Execution: expertise and safety

The installation was carried out by Sabaitek. Working at great height under strict health and safety regulations, the team ensured the flawless execution of every stage of the process. Technical precision was crucial in achieving a consistent result across such a challenging surface.

A more versatile venue

Following the renovation, the sports arena is now equipped not only for sporting events, but also for concerts, festivals and a wide variety of cultural activities. The improved acoustic environment provides clear and comfortable sound without disruptive reverberation, while the new ceiling design gives the entire venue a refreshed and elegant appearance.

Reception of the project

The response has been overwhelmingly positive. Project managers, technical and political stakeholders, and above all the local community, have all praised the transformation. Local media have highlighted both the acoustic and visual improvements, and even nearby businesses and bars confirm that the change has had a tangible impact on the overall event experience.
