When acoustics become care: designing empathetic environments for seniors

Designing care facilities often focuses on medical aspects. Yet the quality of space – especially acoustics – plays a crucial role in the wellbeing of older adults, particularly those with dementia or sensory sensitivities.

The Respite Care Centre in Gdańsk sets a new standard by combining professional care with an empathetic approach to the environment. A range of sensory-friendly solutions was implemented throughout the building: sound-absorbing ceilings to reduce reverberation and noise, appropriate lighting, access to greenery, and quiet interiors that resemble a home-like setting.

This has resulted in a calm, welcoming environment that not only eases the stress of transitioning into a new place but also supports communication, sleep, and overall wellbeing. At this centre, care is not just about the residents – it’s also about a thoughtfully designed space.
